About Elissa Barber

Elissa Barber is a Hamilton-based artist working in a variety of mediums including oil painting, ceramics and analogue printmaking. She creates a personal lens through which to view the female experience that reacts broadly to the historical and contemporary subjugations of this identity while focusing on intimate moments and shared ideas. Her work explores themes of sisterhood, connection, longing and nostalgia through expressions of archetypes connected to femininity and nature.

Elissa experiences Aphantasia which is a neurodivergence that describes an inability to form voluntary images in her head. Not having a mind’s eye steers her practice to depicting what she knows to be true from a developed muscle memory and through repetition. Images are described to herself during the process of making
