About Elissa Barber
Artist Statement:
My work explores the possibilities of the gestural line and its ability to articulate the physical form, evoke emotion and depth with limited information. Figurative abstract subject matter remains the grounding foundation of my explorations in various mediums including but not limited to ink on paper, printmaking, collage and ceramic. The simple, elegant linework is applied to feminine archetypes and symbols as both a direct reflection of my own personal visual vocabulary and an attempt to relate to a more universally shared female experience. I have an underlying desire to draw an emotional response and sense of personal resonance from the viewer, allowing them to see something familiar or nostalgic. There are recurring themes of beauty and modern femininity, connection and self-reflection, particularly on that which is the simplest, purest iteration. Now more than ever I feel it is important that we retain a sense of perspective, that we don’t lose track of what makes us human and my work is in many ways an attempt to personally separate from ego and remind others of what is fundamental and beautiful in this life.
